Mexican Apples From the Balkans

by

Some great music has recently reached my ears, and I really recommend giving a listen to these three bands.

As usual, I’m shamelessly stealing from Wiki here:

Balkan Beat Box is a world music group founded by ex-Gogol Bordello member Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat of Firewater and Big Lazy and Tomer Yosef (MC, vocals, perc, sampler unit). As a musical project they often cooperate with a host of other musicians both in the studio as well as on stage. Their current live crew consist of Tomer Yosef, Ben Hendler, Itamar Ziegler, Eyal Talmudi, Uri Kinrot, Jeremiah Lockwood, and Peter Hess. Amongst their other collaborators are Victoria Hannah, the Bulgarian Chicks, and gnawa player Hassan Ben Jaffar.

This is their MySpace. At the very least, check out Digital Monkey. Oh, and Hermetico, too.

Rodrigo y Gabriela are a Mexican musical duo who specialize in playing fast, rhythmic classical guitars. The duo’s members are Rodrigo Sánchez, lead guitar, and Gabriela Quintero, rhythm guitar (‘y’ is spanish for ‘and’). The pair, now residing in Dublin, Ireland, are from Mexico City, Mexico.

What it doesn’t say there, is that most of their songs are covers of rock and metal tracks. Their versions of Orion (Metallica) and Stairway are insanely awesome. Here’s the MySpace link. Oh, and I’m pretty sure the first part of Vikingman is actually the X-Men animated series theme.

Third and final group are The Apples (התפוחים). They don’t seem to have a Wiki page, and I can’t really describe their music myself. Suffice to say it’s unique, awesome, and awesome. Get on their MySpace, and check out Killing. Probably one of the best covers I’ve ever heard.
